Timothy Fischer
Former Global Diversity Director
Marathon Oil Corporation

Mr. Timothy G. Fischer is an accomplished Global Diversity & Inclusion Director, who over 25 years has consistently delivered results by improving the culture, sense of urgency, and employee focus of Marathon Oil Corporation. Through his +10 years of experience as a Diversity & Inclusion leader with increasing responsibilities, he’s earned deep knowledge of how to jumpstart, build, and sustain D&I initiatives to achieve desired results. Through his enthusiastic energy, collaborative approach, and trust management, he is continually energized by challenging opportunities, coaching colleagues, and the pursuit of excellence.

Most recently, Tim was the Global Diversity & Inclusion Director at Marathon Oil Corporation, where he provided progressive leadership for Diversity & Inclusion after a company spin-off and major transition from 30,000 to 3,000 employees. For 3 years, he preserved the vitality of a successful organization, while taking D&I to the next level. This included embedding essential D&I components within the organization, breaking down the barriers between HR and diversity, and integrating important principles of inclusion into training programs.

Prior to this in 2005, Tim decided to follow his passion and shifted his career path to become a Senior Diversity Consultant for Marathon Oil, where he’d drive daily execution of corporate-wide Diversity & Inclusion programs. Over the next 7 years, he built and led highly effective Diversity & Inclusion teams across the U.S. and Europe to eliminate cultural barriers. Also most notably, he was mentored by Willie Stanfield, a pioneer in the D&I space, who created the Corporate Development & Diversity framework at Marathon Oil.

From 1998 to 2005, Tim served as Senior Financial Analyst with USX Corporation (Marathon’s parent company); an Audit Supervisor with United States Steel; and an Audit Manager with Marathon Oil. In these roles, he leveraged his experience in using facts and analytics to understand trends and develop solutions that led to measureable impact. He also became known as an inclusive leader, driving positive change and leaving teams/organizations in better shape than when he started.

Early in his career, Tim served as Senior Auditor, Exchange Analyst and Inventory Control Accountant for Marathon Oil.

During this time, he progressed steadily through the ranks to lead several audit engagements, including an international assignment in Egypt. He also developed several new standardized audit programs, including Auditor Mentoring Guidelines, which heightened overall efficiency.

Tim obtained his B.A. degree in Accounting from Cedarville College in Ohio in 1990. He went on to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). Ongoing professional development includes Corporate Executive Board (CEB) HR Leadership Academy and American Management Association (AMA) Supervisory Management Program.

In addition to this, Tim is a former member of the American Petroleum Institute and Corporate Executive Board and is actively involved in Catalyst, Human Rights Campaign, AIDS Foundation Houston (Board Member emeritus), Pink Petro, and Texas Diversity Council. He is a frequent presenter, speaker, and panelist for various conferences, seminars, and forums. Also of interest, Tim is featured in an upcoming book by Dr. Joe Ungemah, published by Wiley in the Fall of 2016.
